What to Do in Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi Activities

Koh Phi Phi in Thailand is probably best known these days because of its natural beauty.  The island is still relatively undeveloped and uncrowded and its possible to enjoy many of the activities there without the crowds you might experience in nearby Phuket.  If you are thinking of having a few days to explore all that Koh Phi Phi has to offer here are some recommended activities.

Go Snorkeling

You can slip on some flippers and a mask and snorkel right off the beach in many locations on Phi Phi Island and that can be fun because of the discovery factor.  If you really want to have a great snorkeling trip though I recommend taking one of the organized snorkeling trips offered.  They are inexpensive and the tour operators know all the best places in and around Phi Phi for snorkeling.  You can easily find these tours advertised at Tonsai Bay or at your hotel front desk.

Scuba Diving

Those who are a bit more adventurous should take the opportunity to go scuba diving when on Koh Phi Phi.  The island boasts some of the best diving in Thailand and many people visit Phi Phi just to go diving.  There are many dive shops on the island and prices have been regulated so all the shops are the same price.  Koh Phi Phi is a wonderful place to do your PADI open water diving certification and get your dive license so you can dive anywhere in the world.  Koh Tao is just a short boat ride away and that would be a great second stop after getting dive certified.

Shopping in Tonsai Village

You will find that Tonsai Village is fairly small, but there are all manner of things to be purchased at the shops.  The narrow streets are loaded with shops and not a single inch of space has been wasted.  While it can feel a bit hot and confined during the day, evenings are a great time to stroll around Tonsai and take in all the different things for sale.  You will find prices to be a bit higher here on Phi Phi than they are on the mainland, so if finding the very best bargain is your objective you may want to wait until you get back off Phi Phi to go shopping, but then you will miss out on the island specific souveniers.

A Night on the Town

The nightlife isn't as raucous as it is on nearby Koh Phangan or Koh Samui, but you can still have a great time at night.  The majority of bars and clubs on Koh Phi Phi are located in Tonsai Village as are most of the restaurants.  This makes it ideal to do some shopping, get some dinner and then head out for a night on the (albeit small) town.  You can even get some movie watching in if that’s your thing as many of the bars show free movies early in the evening.

Go On a Jungle Trek

Koh Phi Phi is an island so its natural that most people focus on snorkeling, diving and other water sports.  That’s a shame because there are a number of things to do an see inland as well.  Taking a day to do a jungle trek can be very rewarding as you will be able to see many of the exotic plants and animals that call Phi Phi Island their home.

Rock Climbing

Thanks to the limestone formations in this area the rock climbing on Phi Phi is pretty good.  There are tour operators that organize rock climbing expeditions and you can find appropriate climbs for everyone from the beginner to the advanced rock climber.  Equipment is available for rental from the tour operators and lessons are provided so you have no excuse to give the exhilarating sport a try.
