Make Your Own Body Butter

By

If you are interested in treating yourself to a body butter treatment without the expense of many body butters then this is the place for you.  I’m going to give you two basic recipes for body butter that will make your skin glow, rehydrate the skin and make it soft and silky smooth while also repairing damage from the elements and time.  Now what could be better than that?

The first recipe up is a basic Shea body butter recipe.  If you know anything about body butters and moisturizers you know that this is by far the most popular ingredient in many moisturizing products.  It also has the benefit for our purposes of being easily available in almost any city or town.  And since this is a basic recipe you can experiment with various other oils, additives and fragrances.

Basic Recipe for Body Butter

  • 1 1/3 cups shea butter
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E oil
  • ½ oz fragrance oil (see note)

Start by putting the Shea butter in a medium saucepan over low heat to melt it.  Once it is melted add the olive oil, mix well and remove from the heat.  Let the mixture sit and cool for anywhere from 30-45 minutes.  Just keep your eye on it after 30 minutes because you want it to start to solidify, but you don’t want to let it completely solidify.  Once it has cooled sufficiently add the fragrance and the vitamin E oil.

Now you want to blend everything well with a wire wisk.  Blend until the mixture has the consistency of mousse.  Now place the mixture in an airtight container for storage, but don’t pack it in there or you will lose the mousse like consistency.  Remember to use an airtight container though because just like regular butter, body butter can spoil and turn rancid.

NOTE:  If you are using fragrance be sure to use one that is safe for bath and body products.  And you can skip the fragrance if you want.  The body butter will still come out wonderful smelling.

The above Shea butter recipe should leave your skin very soft and it is good for eczema and dermatitis as well as sunburn, blemishes, insect bites and wrinkles.  It will also aid in the healing of wounds.  As you can see it really is very versatile.

If you want to add a bit of nice cocoa fragrance to your body butter as well as help get rid of stretch marks then the recipe below is for you.  The addition of coconut oil makes this especially good as an anti oxidant and best of all it smells like the islands.  Put this body butter on, close your eyes and imagine that you are in the Bahamas!

Island Girl Body Butter

  • 1 oz Refined Cocoa Butter
  • 1/2 oz ultra refined shea butter
  • 1/2 oz white beeswax pastules
  • 1 oz virgin coconut de creme
  • 1 oz coconut nutri oil
  • a few drops vitamin e

As before, put the Shea butter, Cocoa butter and Beeswax into a medium saucepan on low heat until melted.  Remove from the heat and add the coconut crème and coconut nutri oil.  At this point you will already start to feel the island vibe coming from this body butter.  Let the mixture cool for 30-45 minutes until starting to solidify and then add the vitamin E.  Once again, store in an airtight container and break this out whenever you feel like you need an island break.

And that’s it.  As you can see it’s really quite simple to make your own body butters at home.  Once you get the basic recipes down why not start looking into other ingredients to add to your body butter?  You can really get creative and make this specific to what you need.  It can be tailored to dry skin, oily skin, wrinkles, stretch marks, etc.  Whatever your need you can find ingredients that will help make your skin the best it can be and at the same time exercise your creativity.
